When most people think of Punta Cana, they picture white-sand beaches, turquoise water and an all-inclusive resort. And while there’s nothing wrong with spending a few days beside the pool, the Dominican Republic has far more waiting beyond the resort gates.

One place worth adding to your itinerary is Hoyo Azul, a beautiful natural cenote hidden beneath towering limestone cliffs near Punta Cana. Its incredibly blue freshwater makes it one of the area's most recognisable natural attractions. But don't stop there.

Head towards Macao Beach for a completely different side of Punta Cana. Less dominated by large resorts, this stretch of coastline has golden sand, crashing waves and a much more relaxed local feel. It’s a great choice when you want to swap the sun lounger for somewhere that feels a little more adventurous.

If you're happy to travel further, make a day of exploring the countryside. Drive away from the main tourist areas and you'll see small communities, roadside food stops, tropical landscapes and a side of the Dominican Republic that many visitors never experience.

That's the beauty of renting a car on holiday: you're no longer restricted by excursion times or somebody else's itinerary.

Stop when somewhere catches your eye. Find a quiet beach. Have lunch somewhere you hadn't planned. Stay for sunset because you can.

Punta Cana may be famous for its resorts, but your holiday doesn't have to begin and end at one.
