Dubrovnik might be one of Croatia’s most famous destinations, but you don’t need a full week to experience what makes this part of the Adriatic coast so special. With 48 hours, a little planning and the freedom to explore by car, you can combine Dubrovnik’s historic Old Town with beaches, coastal viewpoints and a taste of the surrounding countryside.

The key is not trying to see everything. Here’s what you can realistically fit into two days.

Day One: Discover Dubrovnik

Start your first morning early in Dubrovnik’s spectacular Old Town. The historic centre is pedestrianised, so park outside the city walls and explore on foot.

Enter through Pile Gate and spend the morning wandering along Stradun, Dubrovnik’s famous main street. You’ll find historic buildings, narrow side streets, cafés and plenty of places to stop and take in the atmosphere.

One of the highlights is walking Dubrovnik’s medieval city walls. Allow around two hours if you want to enjoy the experience without rushing. The route offers incredible views across the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town and out towards the Adriatic.

After lunch, explore more of the historic centre before heading back to your rental car.

Late afternoon is the perfect time to drive towards Mount Srđ. The mountain rises above Dubrovnik and provides some of the best panoramic views of the city, coastline and nearby islands.

Time your visit around sunset and you’ll see Dubrovnik from an entirely different perspective. Afterwards, head back into the city for dinner and enjoy the Old Town after many of the daytime visitors have left.

Day Two: Take a Dubrovnik Road Trip

Your second day is where having a rental car really comes into its own.

Start by driving south from Dubrovnik towards Cavtat. The journey takes roughly 30 minutes, depending on traffic, and gives you the opportunity to see another side of the Dubrovnik region.

Cavtat is a beautiful waterfront town with a much more relaxed atmosphere than central Dubrovnik. Walk along the harbour, stop for coffee beside the water and explore the picturesque streets before continuing your journey.

From Cavtat, you can explore the Konavle region, an area known for its traditional villages, vineyards and countryside. It’s a great contrast to Dubrovnik’s busy historic centre and gives you a better feel for this part of Croatia.

If the weather is good, leave some time during the afternoon for the coast. There are numerous beaches and small bays around Dubrovnik and Cavtat where you can stop for a swim or simply enjoy the Adriatic views.

Then make your way back towards Dubrovnik.

Is 48 Hours in Dubrovnik Enough?

Two days won’t allow you to see everything Dubrovnik and the surrounding region have to offer, but it is enough time to experience the highlights.

The trick is to divide your visit into two parts: spend your first day exploring Dubrovnik itself and use your second day to get beyond the city.

Having your own rental car makes that second day particularly valuable. Instead of organising your day around excursions or public transport, you can choose where you stop, how long you stay and change your plans whenever somewhere catches your eye.

Just remember that driving and parking within Dubrovnik itself can be challenging, particularly during the busy summer months. When visiting the Old Town, it’s usually best to park outside the historic centre and continue on foot.

Make the Most of Your 48 Hours

Dubrovnik is much more than its famous city walls. Within a relatively small area you’ll find historic streets, dramatic coastal scenery, beaches, traditional villages and spectacular viewpoints.

In 48 hours, you can walk the walls of Dubrovnik, watch the sun set over the Adriatic, have coffee beside the harbour in Cavtat and drive through the Croatian countryside.

And that’s a pretty impressive weekend.
