October half-term is one of the most underrated times of the year for a family getaway. The summer crowds have disappeared, temperatures are more comfortable in many destinations, and autumn can completely transform places that you've visited before.

Whether you want to find some late sunshine, introduce the children to a new city or simply escape for a few days, having your own rental car can also make an October break far more flexible.

Here are some of our favourite destinations to consider.

1. Mallorca, Spain

Mallorca isn't just a summer destination. October can be a wonderful time to discover a quieter side of the island, away from the busiest months of July and August.

Hiring a car gives you the freedom to leave the resorts behind. Explore the mountain villages of the Serra de Tramuntana, spend a day wandering around Palma, discover hidden coves or take a family drive to Cap de Formentor.

The weather may not always be beach-perfect, but that's almost the point. Mallorca in autumn is about exploring rather than simply sitting beside the pool.

2. Algarve, Portugal

For families hoping to hold onto the sunshine for a little longer, Portugal's Algarve deserves a place near the top of the list.

Base yourself around Faro, Albufeira, Lagos or one of the smaller coastal towns and you have an enormous amount within driving distance.

One day can be spent discovering dramatic Atlantic beaches, the next exploring traditional Portuguese towns. With a rental car, you're also free to find quieter beaches and restaurants away from the main tourist centres.

3. Edinburgh, Scotland — castles, ghosts and plenty of history

You don't have to fly south to have a memorable October half-term.

Edinburgh is particularly atmospheric in autumn. Edinburgh Castle dominates the city skyline, while the Royal Mile, Camera Obscura, Edinburgh Dungeon and the city's famous underground vaults offer plenty to keep children and adults entertained.

If you have a car, extend the adventure beyond Edinburgh. Stirling Castle, the Scottish countryside and numerous historic towns are all within reach.

Just remember one thing: it's Scotland in October. Pack a coat!

4. Sicily, Italy — food, history and spectacular road trips

Sicily works brilliantly for families who want their holiday to involve a little bit of everything.

There are ancient ruins, beautiful towns, incredible food and the imposing presence of Mount Etna.

A rental car transforms the experience because Sicily is a destination made for exploring. Rather than staying in one resort, create your own family road trip and discover a different part of the island each day.

And convincing the children to stop for another gelato rarely takes much effort.

5. Florida, USA — make half-term a proper adventure

If you have a little more time, October can be a great opportunity for a Florida family holiday.

Orlando's attractions are the obvious draw, but having a car means Florida becomes much bigger than the theme parks.

Head towards the Gulf Coast, visit Kennedy Space Center, spend time at the beach or turn the holiday into a mini road trip.

For families prepared to travel a little further, it can turn one week away from school into a holiday they'll talk about for years.
