Casablanca or Marrakech: Which Should You Choose?

Casablanca or Marrakech: Which Should You Choose?

Casablanca and Marrakech are two of Morocco’s best-known cities, but choosing between them isn’t simply a question of which has the most attractions. They offer completely different types of trips.

Casablanca is modern, energetic and coastal, with a distinctly local, big-city feel. Marrakech is colourful, historic and intense, packed with souks, riads and the sights and sounds that many people imagine when they think of Morocco.

The right choice really comes down to the kind of holiday you enjoy.

Casablanca: Coast, Culture and Modern Morocco

Casablanca is a great choice for travellers who enjoy discovering the everyday side of a destination rather than following a traditional tourist trail.

Morocco’s largest city is busy, modern and constantly moving. Its wide boulevards, cafés, restaurants and Art Deco architecture give it a completely different feel from the historic streets of Marrakech.

The city’s unmissable landmark is the Hassan II Mosque. Built partly over the Atlantic Ocean, its location is every bit as impressive as its architecture. Even on a short visit, this should be near the top of your list.

The Atlantic is also a big part of Casablanca’s appeal. Head towards the Corniche and the pace changes, with ocean views, restaurants and cafés providing somewhere to spend a slower afternoon away from the city centre.

Casablanca particularly suits travellers who enjoy food, architecture and watching everyday city life unfold around them. It feels less like a destination designed around tourism and more like somewhere you’re temporarily becoming part of.

It’s also an excellent starting point for exploring more of Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Having a rental car gives you the option of heading beyond the city towards places such as Rabat or El Jadida, turning a few days in Casablanca into the beginning of a much bigger trip.

Casablanca probably isn’t the choice for someone dreaming of spending their entire holiday wandering ancient souks and staying in a traditional riad. For that, Marrakech has the advantage.

Marrakech: Souks, Riads and the Morocco You Imagined

Marrakech delivers a completely different experience from the moment you arrive.

At its heart is the Medina, where narrow streets twist between colourful stalls selling spices, lanterns, carpets, leather goods and traditional crafts. Getting slightly lost is almost part of the experience.

Then there’s Jemaa el-Fnaa, the famous central square that changes character throughout the day. By evening, the lights are on, the food stalls are busy and the entire area seems to come alive.

Marrakech is particularly suited to travellers looking for atmosphere. Traditional riads hide behind simple doorways, restaurants occupy beautiful courtyards and rooftop terraces offer views across the city.

It’s also a destination that rewards slowing down. You don’t necessarily need a packed itinerary. An afternoon exploring the souks followed by mint tea on a terrace can be just as memorable as visiting another attraction.

But Marrakech has another side that becomes apparent as soon as you leave the city.

The Atlas Mountains and Ourika Valley are within reach, giving you the opportunity to combine a city break with mountain scenery, villages and open roads. A rental car is particularly useful here, allowing you to leave the busy centre behind and explore at your own pace.

So, Casablanca or Marrakech?

For a modern Moroccan city with Atlantic views, impressive architecture and a more local urban atmosphere, Casablanca makes a compelling choice.

For historic streets, souks, riads, rooftop restaurants and easy access to the Atlas Mountains, Marrakech offers the more traditional Moroccan escape.

But perhaps the most interesting option is not choosing between them at all.

The two cities are around 240 kilometres apart, making them easy to combine as part of the same trip. Start beside the Atlantic in Casablanca, pick up a car and continue towards Marrakech — or make the journey in reverse.

You’ll experience two very different cities and, more importantly, see some of Morocco in between.

Because Casablanca and Marrakech aren’t really alternatives to one another.

Together, they show just how different one Moroccan holiday can be from the next.
